River Oaks apartments tear apart by fire

Up to 100 units of the River Oaks apartment complex have been destroyed by fire, the Atlanta Fire Department said Thursday.

The fire is under investigation.

The blaze broke out about 3:30 a.m.

Thursday in the parking lot of a River Oaks Apartments on the 1400 block of East River Avenue, according to the Atlanta fire department.

Atlanta firefighters responded to the scene to contain the blaze and the city’s Fire Marshal’s Office has activated an incident command center.

The building has been destroyed and is in the process of being demolished, according a statement from the city.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed has declared a state of emergency in the city of Atlanta.

A city spokesman told CNN affiliate WSB-TV that the fire was under investigation and that it is “under control.”
